The actors support the social campaign "What is the horse?", which aims to help mares in the care of the Zwierzęca Polana Foundation. In Poland, 9 out of 10 horses end their lives prematurely. They cannot count on a peaceful old age, but end up in a slaughterhouse. One of the few stables where sick animals are allowed to live the last years of their lives with dignity goes under the hammer. The only salvation is to build a new asylum.
For eight years, the Zwierzęca Polana Foundation has been buying horses intended for slaughter from the so-called death markets and providing them with care and medical assistance. The stable, where the foundation's charges live, is to be sold. Its inhabitants include three mares rescued just before they were sent to the slaughterhouse: the delicate Popita, the young Cecylia, who suffered a fracture trauma, and the 13-year-old Iza – a draft horse. Especially horses such as Iza are bred for meat, that is why they live and that is why they give birth to foals. Some of them still have to work hard. There are many more such cases, and the foundation is fighting for all the horses that it can save.
“These are actions that make us empathize, we start to look at animals not as objects, but entities. For animals, just like us, are tender, sensitive, emotional, bonding, and suffering. And it's not about humanizing animals, but recognizing that they have a very similar space to humans and that we, as humans, as more conscious beings, are responsible for them,” Katarzyna Warnke said.
The actress recalls that she had the opportunity to learn about the nature of horses, among others in a theater school, where actors were prepared for such roles as in "By Fire and Sword". So, mastering horse riding was a duty, then very pleasant for her.
