Poland spends more and more on army
In 2020, a total of 2.37 percent of Poland’s GDP was allocated to state defense expenditure, summarized by the Ministry of Defense (MON). The ministry also emphasized that the pandemic situation forced "flexibility" in the implementation of the ministry's budget tasks in the past year.
Responding to PAP's questions, the MON recalled that the "National Defense" part of the 2020 budget was adopted in the amount of PLN 49.01 billion, which meant 2.1 percent of the GDP of the planning year. During the year, under the October amendment to this year's budget law, state defense spending was increased by PLN 3 billion, entirely in the area of modernization expenditure.
In addition, MON indicated that the share of property expenditure (PLN 17.35 billion) in the entire budget of the Ministry of Defense (PLN 52.01 billion) accounts for 33 percent.
"This is the highest level of capital expenditure so far, i.e. pro-development, in nominal and percentage terms," the ministry emphasized.
The MON also indicated that Poland is one of the few countries that fulfill its allied commitment of financing the armed forces at the level of 2.0 percent of GDP.
